Architecture and Culture

We're going to Italy June 1- 9, 2020, space is limited to 6 people for this special experience!

Italy is so much more than Rome, there are incredible places that are being rediscovered by, not only Italians, but a few others in the know. We'll travel to those places and explore the hidden culture of places like the Eternal City of Rome, the Amalfi coast and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sassi di Matera in the south. The food, people, architecture are all awe-inspiring and will fill you with wonder. We’ll enjoy the people, sights, sounds, music and food through private guided tours, a private cooking class and much more.

Day 1 - Arrival day in Rome, afternoon check in to the hotel, dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 - We’ll avoid the crowds and take an exclusive, early morning private tour of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s. Located in the smallest country in the world, Vatican City, The Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s are a very important stop on our visit. The Vatican sits not just at the center of Roman Catholicism, but is also home to one of the most impressive collection of art in the world. After our visit, we’ll have lunch at a local restaurant where we’ll enjoy delicious local Italian dishes. After a brief siesta, we’ll take a private tour of the Coliseum and Forum in the late afternoon. Although partially ruined because of damage caused by earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is still an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and is listed as one of the New 7 Wonders of the world. Dinner at our hotel and relaxing.

Day 3 - After breakfast, we’ll leave Rome for the UNESCO World Heritage jewel of the Sassi di Matera, stopping along the Naples coast for lunch. After arriving in Matera in the early evening and checking in to the hotel there will be time to relax before dinner at a local restaurant. After dinner we’ll take a casual night walk around the Sassi before heading back to the hotel.

Day 4 - After breakfast, we’ll take a private tour of the artisan shops, learn about the arts and crafts of Matera, (local food shop, jewelry, wood) time for shopping. Matera has a very ancient tradition of skilled artisans whose professional abilities and secrets have been handed down from one generation to another. Here you can find those artisans’ laboratories where you can admire their creations that sometimes combine the traditional forms to the research of a personal style; the final results is unique art that tells everybody the story of an ancient city and it’s rich artisan heritage. After lunch, we’ll take a private guided tour of the Sassi, the only place in the world where people can boast to be still living in the same houses of their ancestors of 9,000 years ago. The Sassi are houses dug into the rock itself, originating from a prehistoric period and are suspected to be among the first human settlements in Italy. After our tour, we’ll get ready for dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 5 - Today we’ll visit the abandoned village of Craco. Inhabited since the 6th century, this town has a long history in the region. We’ll learn the history of the village and take a private tour of the ghost town abandoned after an earthquake further destroyed the ancient site. Afterwards, we’ll travel to the countryside for a traditional cooking class where we’ll learn to make pasta with Eliana. We’ll enjoy the late lunch we’ve made together, optional wine tasting is available at an additional cost.

Day 6 - We’ll leave Matera for the Amalfi coast, but before that we’ll visit Pietrperstosa, located just east of Castelmezzano, this picturesque hilltop town is classed as one of the most beautiful towns in all of Basilicata, and also the highest. It overlooks the mountains of the Lucanian Dolomites, and is well known to scare and amaze tourists as the town sits close to the edges of the rock it is situated on, with sheer rock faces on all sides of the town giving it the alternative name ‘City in the Clouds’.  After enjoying lunch, we’ll go to the Amalfi coast in the evening, check in to the hotel, relax before dinner.

Day 7- After breakfast, we’ll take a private guided tour exploring the beautiful Saint Andrew’s cathedral. First time visitors to Amalfi often stand in awe when they first catch sight of this stunning church. The Duomo, as it is usually referred to in town, is the religious, historic and cultural heart of Amalfi. After lunch, we’ll spend the afternoon in Ravello, a charming town that sits atop the cliffs overlooking the sea exploring the beautiful historic villas, and a private guided tour of the Duomo and museum.
